Dr. Niamh O'Sullivan

Dr Niamh Anna O’Sullivan is an Australian-trained Specialist Dermatologist, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an international award-winning Harvard-trained PhD researcher.  She specialises in Mohs micrographic surgery (the gold standard for management of non-melanoma skin cancers on the head and neck, with the highest cure rates and smallest scars) and skin cancer surgery for basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas (including melanoma in-situ and facial lentigo maligna).

A commitment to skin cancer prevention, early detection, surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies, skin cancer surveillance (skin checks) and risk reduction as well as her attention to detail set her apart as your specialist.  Her genuine passion for excellence in skin cancer treatment has stemmed from international training in centres of excellence in dermatology, Mohs surgery and plastic surgery, including Boston (Harvard), Scotland, London, Perth, and Sydney (The Skin Hospital and the Melanoma Institute Australia) before opening her own practice.

Having gained her medical degree in the UK, she completed her research fellowship at Harvard Medical School and was awarded a PhD for her research in the tissue-engineered ear. During her time at Harvard and the Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, she was awarded multiple prizes including the Genzyme International prize for research excellence and was the sole recipient of the Mercedes-Benz/Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation USA fellowship 2004-5.

Following her research, she trained in plastic surgery for 4 years in UK centres of excellence, before moving to Australia to train as a dermatologist and pursue her passion in the holistic management of skin cancer.  She is grateful to have been trained by some of Australia’s most eminent dermatologists and Mohs surgeons in addition to several of the world’s finest plastic surgeons.

She has presented globally at numerous national and international meetings including being an invited speaker at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Meeting, Plastic Surgery Research Council, The New England Society of Plastic Surgeons, European Society of Plastic Surgery, The International Cartilage Repair Society, the Australasian College of Dermatology and the Cambodian Dermatological Society meeting in Phnom Penh and was made an honorary fellow of the society. She also received a scholarship to attend the European Association of Dermatologists and Venerologists in Vienna. She was the co-chair of the surgical session at the Australasian College of Dermatology Annual Scientific meeting in Sydney. Dr O’Sullivan is the Vice President of the Australasian Society of Dermatopathology, underscoring her commitment to excellence in examination of skin under the microscope for world class diagnosis.

As a trans-Atlantic racing sailor and keen golfer who enjoys tennis and an outdoor life, I moved to Australia with my Scottish husband to enjoy all that this incredible country has to offer. I am a proud Australian citizen and with my fair complexion, Irish heritage, and extensive professional experience, I appreciate the need for excellence in skin cancer care and risk reduction coupled with a balanced and enjoyable life.

Niamh’s unique skill set encompassing both dermatology, plastic surgery and cutting-edge research allow her to provide a bespoke, evidence-based, compassionate, collaborative approach to your cancer care. She is committed to prevention, early detection and excellence in skin cancer management. She is happy to provide urgent appointments to those with concerning lesions (with GP referrals).
